The Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC) announced on 5 February that it has established a youth affairs department with the aim of providing special services to young people who are losing opportunities, in Karenni (Kayah) State.

Khun Thomas, the Dean of the Department of Youth Affairs established by the IEC, stated that the formation of the IEC aims to provide services to youths who lack educational opportunities and those struggling with drug issues in the current interim situation.

Khun Thomas said, “At this moment, what we can say is that during this interim period, we are beginning to focus on how to effectively address issues such as job opportunities, young people who have lost their way, those struggling to continue their education, and those trapped in the cycle of drug addiction. Our department will continue to implement solutions step by step.”

Khun Thomas said that, according to the interim plan, the department will address youth-related issues, including youth and sports, as well as youth and drug-related concerns.

A 24-year-old Karenni youth from Demoso Township said, “The newly-formed Youth Affairs Department under the IEC, which aims to control drug use and trafficking among the youth, has become a source of hope.”

The youth added, “What plans do you have for young people who are addicted to drugs and gambling? I believe that the Youth Affairs Department will become the strongest and most reliable department if the IEC can win the hearts of the people and organize them.”

He also expressed hope to rekindle interest in education among youths whose studies were interrupted by the revolution and to provide educational opportunities for CDM students involved in the armed struggle.

During the interim period, the IEC is developing administrative mechanisms in Karenni State. Currently, there are 11 departments under the IEC, including the newly-formed Youth Affairs Department.
