The military junta has increased security in Mohnyin town, Kachin State, following a shooting on a joint force of junta police and affiliated militia, according to local sources.

Six members of the joint force of police and militia were shot on 5 January while they were stopping vehicles and pedestrians to extort money on the detour in Mohnyin.

The junta began increased inspections of passenger vehicles and residents across the town on the morning of 6 February, according to a woman from Mohnyin.

“They’re checking very strictly. They inspect passenger vehicles more strictly. Now SNA (Shanni Nationalities Army) members as well as militia members and junta soldiers are present at every intersection in the town,” said the woman.

According to locals, the junta forces are strictly searching passenger vehicles, including checking ID cards and opening luggage.

Among the six members of the joint police and militia team who were attacked, one died on the spot and four were seriously injured. The four injured were receiving medical treatment at Mohnyin hospital with heavy security, according to local sources.

Another woman from Mohnyin said: “Since their people are hospitalized, they have placed security around and inside the hospital area. There might be about 40 personnel in total.”

Locals speculate that the Mohnyin Defense Force might be responsible for the attack on the joint team of police and militia under the military council.

Mohnyin town has 22 downtown wards and is a territory where the SNA and junta-affiliated militia are mainly active. The town is located on the Myitkyina- Mandalay road.
