Around 20,000 locals displaced by ongoing fighting in Pwintbyu

Around 20,000 people have been displaced due to the ongoing fighting between military council troops and local defense forces in Pwintbyu Township, Magway Region, according to locals.

Locals said that due to the military council’s raids on villages in Pwintbyu Township, around 20,000 people from 14 villages have fled to areas near Pwintbyu town and Magway.

A local said, “On 1 February, fighting erupted, and the people remain displaced. They have been leaving the villages in both large and small vehicles.”

More than 20,000 people from nearby villages, including Made (Min Tae), Htein Aing, Kani, Inn Kone, Htu Pauk, Mezali, Htan Taw Gyi, Kywe Chan, Lel Ma, Yae Yin, Se Taw, Ma Gyi Su, Hpa Lan Kyin and Nyaung Pin Waing villages in Pwint Phyu Township, have been displaced.

On 1 February, fighting erupted between the defense forces and the junta forces in Made, Kani and Innkone villages, as well as near Mezali bridge.

On the early morning of 1 February, the military council dropped bombs on Yae Yin village using a paramotor. On the same day, the military conducted at least five aerial bombings using jet fighters during the battle near Mezali bridge, according to sources close to the defense force.

The defense forces have not confirmed the situation regarding the battle at Mezali Bridge.

A local was killed and another injured by heavy shelling fired by the military council during the fighting in Made village. The shelling also destroyed around 220 houses, according to locals.

Locals said the military council looted goods from shops in Mezali village, on 3 February.
