The Mandalay People’s Defense Force (MDY-PDF), which operates within Mandalay Region, announced on 30 December that it will establish a new brigade in Sagaing Region.
According to Mandalay-PDF, they plan to expand with a new brigade in Sagaing Region and intensify military operations throughout 2025.
In forming this new brigade, they have welcomed allied resistance forces and expressed readiness to coordinate for coordinated military operations.
The territories currently under Mandalay PDF’s control share borders with Sagaing Township, Wetlet Township, Tigyaing Township, Tagaung Town, and Shwebo Township in Sagaing Region, areas that are effectively controlled by People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) under the National Unity Government (NUG).
“On the western bank of the Irrawaddy River, along the Sagaing-Mandalay border, the PDFs are strong in areas like Shwebo, Kyauk Myaung, and Wetlet. We can expect more battles in these territories next year,” said a political observer from Tigyaing.
Alongside the allied ethnic resistance forces, the Mandalay-PDF participated in operations to capture Mogok, Singu, and Thabeikkyin Townships in Mandalay Region in 2024.
