Census – taking halted in some areas after attacks on junta forces in Palaw

Census-taking has been halted in certain areas following an attack on military council troops who were providing security for census workers in Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to local residents and revolutionary forces.

Since 1 October, the census-taking has begun in Magyikone village and Palauk, as well as No.1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 wards in Palaw Township.

The joint revolutionary forces conducted drone strikes on military council soldiers stationed at the Microwave Hill camp near Infantry Battalion-285 in Ward No. 5, as well as at the Tower Hill camp and in Magyikone village.

The information officer of Myeik District No. 1 Battalion said that they have not seen any census-taking since the military council soldiers who were providing security were attacked.

The military council has halted census-taking in Magyikone village and Ward No. 5. However, the census continues in urban areas under their strong control, accompanied by a strong presence of security forces.

A local man said that most of the local residents do not agree with the military council’s census-taking, and the residents of the town are also are concerned that the people will be conscripted under the pretext of census-taking.

According to all available information, census-taking has started in all townships except Launglon Township in Myeik District and Dawei District since 1 October. In Kawthaung Township, the census is set to begin on 10 October.

On 2 October, the military council announced that it is conducting a census in the Tanintharyi Region, employing over 1,000 staff for the 2024 population and household census.
