Young girl killed in junta’s shooting in Launglon

A 16-year-old girl was fatally shot by the military council force during a skirmish near Tha Byar village in Launglon Township in Tanintharyi Region, local residents said.

On the afternoon of 10 July, a skirmish occurred between a military column of approximately 30 junta soldiers departing from Launglon and a local defense force near Tha Byar village.

Subsequently, junta soldiers entered Tha Byar village. A young girl who emerged from a bomb shelter while junta soldiers were interrogating civilians inside a house near the monastery was fatally shot when, a local resident said.

Ma Thet Htar Khaing (also known as Waing Lay), aged 16, died on the spot after being hit by a bullet in her deltoid, according to local source.

Regarding the incident, another resident said that the military council entered Ma Thet Htar Khaing’s house. She was fatally shot when she emerged from the bomb shelter out of fear, while junta soldiers brutally beating and interrogating her parents, accusing them of funding the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs).

The Dawei District Strike Committee announced that the military council’s indiscriminate shooting of civilians constitutes a war crime. They emphasized that all officials of the military council will be held accountable for these actions.

Ko Min Lwin Oo, a member of the Dawei District Strike Committee, urged both armed forces to distinguish between civilian and military targets and to avoid engaging in conflict in villages where civilians reside.

A heavy shell fired by the military council force hit and killed a 30-year-old man in Tha Yar Kone village in Launglon Township on 3 April.
