In April, 13 civilians were killed and at least 113 others arrested by the military council and resistance forces in Tanintharyi Region where fighting is intensifying, according to the FE5 Tanintharyi.

The killings were reported in April as the PDFs carried out assassinations of military informants. There are civilian deaths due to intentional killings by the military council and pro-military groups.

In addition, the military council arrested and used locals as human shields during its offensives against the villages. There were deaths at the time of arrests and the extortion on the pretext of guest list inspections, FE5 Tanintharyi said.

On the other hand, residents said that one in three people was killed by the PDFs by mistake, under the pretext of assassinating informants, according to FE5 Tanintharyi.

Launglon Township PDF announced on 12 April that U Kyi Lay who was close to the military council was accidentally shot and killed while arresting him in Pyinhtein village in Launglon Township.

Regarding this incident, the villagers and 13 local forces have filed a complaint with the National Unity Government (NUG) to seek justice for the killing of U Kyi Lay because he was not the military council’s informant.

In addition to the killings by the junta forces and junta-backed groups, five civilians were killed by artillery shelling, landmine explosions and intentional killings. The perpetrators responsible for the deaths of the remaining five individuals cannot be identified, FE5 Tanintharyi said.

With the renewed fighting intensifying in April, the junta arrested at least 94 civilians in four townships in Dawei District. Of them, 76 detainees were released. Two others died.

In addition, the junta arrested at least 10 civilians in Myeik and Bokpyin Townships. Later, the junta released them.

According to FE5 Tanintharyi, nine people were arrested by the armed forces in Dawei and Myeik Districts. The follow-up information about them is still unknown.

At least 265 civilians were killed by the junta and resistance forces in Tanintharyi Region in 2023, according to a report by the FE5 Tanintharyi
