Locals have fled to safer places as the military council’s battalions based in Ye Township of Mon State are firing heavy shells toward the villages without any ground fighting.

Since 20 January, Light Infantry Division-588, Light Infantry Battalion-106 and the Artillery Battalion based in Ye Township have been firing heavy shells toward Kwandu village in Ye Township, the villagers said.

A local from Kwandu village said: ÒThere is constant heavy shelling. The situation is worse at night. Locals are afraid due to constant heavy shelling. Almost all people from the village have fled for safety. There are no reports of civilian casualties. However, the shells hit the roofs of houses.”

Kwandu village is located on Ye-Thanbyuzayat road section. It is adjacent to LIB-343 based in Aryutaung village, locals said.

The military council’s shelling has forced almost all villagers to flee to nearby beach and Aryutaung village, a Kwandu local continued.

On the morning of 20 January, the joint revolutionary forces took control of the checkpoint on the suspension bridge near Mawkanin village in Ye Township and seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition, the joint revolutionary forces said.

Following the attack on the suspension bridge checkpoint, the military council has tightened security in Kaninkamaw and Mawkanin villages.

“Now, the military council has deployed many soldiers in Mawkanin village. The military is conducting regular checks on the road as usual,” a local from Lamaing said.

There have been frequent fighting between the military council and the combined revolutionary forces on Ye-Thanbyuzayat road section in Ye Township, resulting in civilian casualties, local residents said.
