More than 12,000 residents from around 16 villages have been displaced within a month due to the military council’s offensives in Longlon Township in Tanintharyi Region, according to the list compiled by Launglon Township People’s Administration.
Residents said that the military council’s column started entering Nyin Maw village in Launglon Township on 13 December.
“It has been about one month since the military council has been committing violence, killings, burning of civilian houses, stealing of gold, money and valuables by burgling civilian houses and arrests of civilians as human shields, for one month. These cases happen every two to three months. Before, the same thing happened every now and then. The person who was arrested to guide them was also killed,” said an in-charge of the Launglon People’s Administration.
According to local residents, a military council column arrived at Nyaw Pyin village in Launglon on 9 January and set the village on fire, destroying half of the village (more than 100 houses).
The military council’s offensives and arsons destroyed around 100 civilian houses in Nyaw Pyin village, 19 in Lay Thun Khan village, nine in Sit Pyae village, five in Hinchotaw village, three each from Thakyattaw village and Thanlyin village and one each from Painnaetaw, Kyatyittwin and Thabyayshaung villages, according to the Public Administration.
Local organizations have accused that the military column of more than 100 soldiers conducted offensives in the villages. Junta soldiers burgled the houses and looted valuables. However, the details of these burglaries have yet to be confirmed.
Ward/village public administrations under the Township People’s Administration have provided the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) with ration, accommodation and health care.
