In-charge of anti-malaria project gets life sentence in Banmauk

Ko Than Naing Oo, an in-charge of the malaria eradication project in northern Banmauk Township in Sagaing Region, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the military council under martial law.

On 20 October, Ko Than Naing Oo was sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 50 (j) and Section 52 (a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law by the military court, the news sources close to the military council said.

The military council soldiers arrested Ko Than Naing Oo at the malaria eradication office in Hlwazinkone ward in Banmauk in mid-2023, a local from Banmauk said.

Before the arrest of Ko Than Naing Oo, People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) from the malaria eradication office frequently fired shots at the military camp with small arms, a local from Banmauk close to the military council said.

According to the military council’s statement, Ko Than Naing Oo collected money from the gold mining industry, buy and transport rations for local PDFs, gave information about the military activities and inquired about regional situations.

Ko Than Naing Oo was working as an in-charge of the INGOs for the malaria eradication project in northern Banmauk, a local resident from Banmauk said.

On the same day, the military council sentenced Ma Myat Noe Wai from Banmauk Township to seven years in prison with hard labour. Ko Zaw Myint Tun from Indaw Township adjacent to Banmauk Township was sentenced to life imprisonment.

On 20 October alone, sentences were handed down by the military council to ten people —two from Yinmarbin Township where, three from Shwebo and three from Indaw Township, where martial law was declared, according to the news sources close to the military council.
