Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in the southern part of Kalay Township in Sagaing Region are in urgent need of shelters, according to the IDPs and the persons helping the IDPs in Kalay Township.

Currently, it is raining continuously in the southern part of Kalay Township. The rainproof sheets used at the IDP camps are almost a year old. The IDPs face difficulties due to rainwater leakage, the persons helping the IDPs said.

Ko Thurein who is helping the IDPs in Kalay Township said: “Now, we are in urgent need of rainproof sheets. The IDPs have submitted complaints about the leakage of rainwater, asking officials to help them as quickly as possible. We still don’t have enough budget to provide them with shelter. Now it’s raining continuously. The rainproof sheets are no longer good as they are now 7 or 8 months old.

He added that if we can provide around 50 18-foot rainproof sheets for the IDPs, they will be able to overcome the difficulties they are currently facing.

It has been raining continuously for almost two weeks in the southern part of Kalay, and due to flash flooding, people are also facing difficulties in travelling.

In addition, some IDPs from Magway Region have arrived in the southern part of Kalay Township again. They are in need of blankets, jackets and shelters for the winter season, the persons helping the IDPs said.

Currently, there are 13 IDP camps in Kalay Township. More than 20,000 to nearly 30,000 IDPs are taking shelter in seven IDP camps. Due to the military council’s offensives and ongoing fighting, the IDPs also are taking refuge at the houses of their relatives and friends.
