Three family members injured after shell hit civilian house in Hpakant’s Hsengtaung

Three members of a family were injured after an artillery shell fired by Myanmar’s junta hit a civilian house in Hsengtaung Ward, Hpakant, Kachin State, according to local residents.

A resident of Hpakant said, “It happened in Hsengtaung on Saturday night. The artillery shell hit the husband, wife and their nephew. The shell fired from Hpakant landed in the south of Hsan Thida military hill. It hit the civilian house and the entire roof was blown off. People were injured there as well. But they are not dead. They said they were being treated in the township hospital”

Due to the explosion of the artillery shell, the three family members suffered injuries to their heads, hands and legs and were taken to the Hpakant hospital by local aid workers, local residents said.

People close to the victims said that of the three, U Zin Myo Latt, the husband, was in critical condition and was taken to Mandalay General Hospital on 1 October morning.

“All three are in a critical condition. They were taken to Hpakant hospital the same night. The husband was admitted to Mandalay General Hospital yesterday (1 Oct. ). The injuries involve the head, arms and legs. I only know the husband’s name. They said his condition is worrying,” said one of the local aid workers.

The artillery shell hit the civilian house in Hsengtaung Ward around 10:30 pm on 30 September. Before the shell hit, four bombs exploded near the police station hill where junta troops are stationed. Afterwards, military council troops responded with artillery, local residents said.

A Hpakant resident said four bombs exploded near the police station at about 11:30 pm on 30 September.

In addition, the police station was attacked by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the Kachin People’s Defense Force (KPDF) on 25 September, residents said.
