A total of 40 civilians including those killed in the landslide have been killed, in Hpakant Township Kachin State last August, according to locals.
The military council arrests and kills suspected civilians while some civilians are killed in the theft and robberies every month in Hpakant which sees the rising number of migrants after the military coup.
A local from Hsaingtaung ward said: “It is no longer uncommon to see the bodies of those killed in Hpakant as usual. But there is one thing. I don’t know when I will be one of them.”
Among the victims are: those killed and abandoned by the military council, those killed in the quarrels and the military informants assassinated by the defense forces, according to locals.
The number of migrants has increased by twice here. For instance, only six of 33 victims who were killed in the landslide have owners. Most of those killed are ownerless. It is difficult to say exactly who killed them,” a local woman from Hmawwan in Hpakant.
Those killed in late August are: 33 civilians killed by the landslide in Mana village on 13 August, two men murdered in front of the gem market in Yumar ward on 17 August, one man killed beside the road in Lonekin ward, one in Pharpyin, a young woman in Shayawkha on 29 August and two men killed in the quarrels in Mashikahtaung and Swatkyaing village on 31 August.
Some of the migrants who came to Hpakat after the coup have started moving to Chiphwe and Panwar since early July as the killings of people are getting worse day by day in Hpakant, according to Hpakant locals.
