Four civilians including a woman from Indaw Township in Katha District in Sagaing Region were sentenced to death by the military council under Section 49 (a) and 52 (b) of the Counter-Terrorism Law, according to the military council’s statement on 22 August.
According to the media controlled by the North-West Command, under the martial law, they were sent to the court martial for failing to report the news about the carrying of arms and ammunition. On 18 August, they were sentenced to death under Section 49 (a) and 52 (b) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.
Those who get the death penalty are: Ma Myint Myint Aye (aka) Aye Aye, Zaw Myo Tun (aka) Tonny, Aung Kyaw Kyaw Moe (aka) Lar Lar and Kyaw Saw Win (aka) Kyaw Swa from Indaw Township.
Thein Soe Naing from Kawlin Township was sentenced to life under Section 50 (j) and 52 (a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law while San Htoo from Kawlin Township and Ma Su Mon Kyaw from YeU Township got life sentence under Section 50 (j) and 52 (b) of the Counter-Terrorism Law, according to the statement on 23 August.
According to the statement, the number of the cases filed under the Martial Law in Sagaing Region, Magway Region and Chin State in the North-West Command has reached 218 till 23 August, according to the pro-military media.
Following the military council’s extension of the state of emergency for an additional six month on 1 August. Those involved with the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) get heavy sentences, according to locals.
A local from Katha Township said: “After the extension of the state of emergency this month, the military council has tightened the rules. The military council is carrying out reinforcements of troops to the upper Myanmar by military ships. Finally, the punishments for people arrested in connection with the PDFs have become quite severe.”
