Resumed fighting displaces more than 500 locals in Dawei Ashaetaw

Fighting has resumed after the military council’s offensive in the Ashaetaw area in Dawei Township of Tanintharyi Region, Bo Yet Kha, in-charge of Dawei Collective Column (DCC) said.

More than 500 locals from Thinkantone, Bawabin and Lakekyalpyaung villages have fled to safety as the military column has been conducting offensives in the villages in the Dawei Ashaetaw area since the previous days.

Fighting took place with the combined local defense force as a military column of nearly 80 soldiers entered Thinkantone village at around 1 pm on 16 August, an official of the DCC said.

Fighting took place for more than one hour, killing three military council soldiers and wounding others. However, the exact number of the wounded is not known yet, he continued.

After the battle, the military column entered a monastery in Lakekyalpyaung village. On the morning of 17 August, the military column proceeded to Pakhan village, according to the DCC.

More than 36,000 people have been displaced by the fighting between the military council and the combined forces in Tanintharyi Region in late July, according to local research organizations.
