Internally Displaced People (IDPs) from Khalal-Tagundaing in Kyarinseikgyi Township dare not return to their homes till date, the IDPs said.
Almost all the people from Naungdae, Palain, Khalal and Tagundaing in Khalal-Tagundaing area are displaced by the fighting which started on 14 July between the military council force and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) combined force.
A local from Naungdae said: “The shooting was not very far from the village, not inside the village. We left the village fearing that the military plane would come. There are not many people left in the village.”
Currently, the military council’s Artillery Battalion-318 based in Abit village in Mudon Township of Mon State is firing heavy shells into Khalal-Tagundaing village almost every day. Locals said they dare not to return to the village as they fear that fighting may occur in the region.
“I have heard that there are no more shootings now, but I dare not to return to the village yet. I can’t contact the people as the phone line is very poor in my village. I will go home only when the people in the village contact me and know the situation,” a local who fled to Mudon said.
Most of the IDPs have fled to Mudon while some IDPs are taking shelter in nearby villages, according to the IDPs.
In June, heavy shells fired by the military council’s Artillery Battalion-318 based in Abit village landed and exploded near the village, forcing around 1500 people from Palain, Khalal, Tagundaing and Nanthaingtun villages to flee.
