23 civilians killed, over 170 others arrested in Tanintharyi Region in June

Twenty-three civilians were killed and over 170 others arrested in townships in Tanintharyi Region in June, according to the report by FE5 Tanintharyi, a research organization.

Ten civilians were shot dead by the military council, six by the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) under the pretext of clearing informants and seven by the unknown group, the report says.

In June, the military council arrested over 170 civilians and released over 100 detainees. The military council has filed the cases against the remaining detainees under the sections carrying heavy sentences, according to the report.

Eight civilian deaths are reported in Palaw Township, three each in Kawthaung, Launglon and Thayetchaung Townships, two each in Myeik and Tanintharyi Townships and one each in the remaining townships.

The number of civilian deaths increased by two compared to 21 civilian deaths in May.

Tanintharyi Region saw 41 clashes in June. Most clashes are targeted attacks by the combined revolutionary forces on the military council’s battalions and camps.

The total number of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) has exceeded 35,000 in Tanintharyi Region, the report says.

Since early July, the military council has been carrying out the reinforcement of troops, the military column’s advance and ration supply in Tanintharyi Township, according to locals and revolutionary forces.
