One child killed, two seriously wounded in Kalay

The military council’s shelling killed a child and seriously wounded two children in the battle between the military council and Kalay-People’s Defense Force (PDF) in Thazi village in Kalay Township in Sagaing Region, according to locals.

Fighting took place at around 8 am on 16 June. The military council’s shell landed and exploded on a monastery in Thazi village, killing a four-year-old boy and wounding two children.

“There are children learning their lessons at the monastery in Thazi village. Shelling killed a child and wounded two others. Due to ongoing fighting, the people beside Thazi village have fled to forests. Two civilian houses were burned down in Thazi village,” a person helping locals said.

Shrapnel hit the abdomen of a boy and killed him. The seriously wounded children are in critical condition, he said.

Locals from Thazi, Chinhsaing and Zinkalin villages have fled to safer places due to the battle, he continued.

Thazi village is located about three miles to the south of Kalay and on the Kalay-Gagaw road. It is home to over 1,000 households and nearly 5,000 populations.

There are more than 3,000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) from three villages. Thazi village is adjacent to Chinhsaing and Zinkalin villages, the people helping the IDPs.

The military council is making frequent raids on Thazi village and nearby villages. Villagers return to home when there is no fighting, the villagers said.
