More than 3,000 locals from KhinU flee for safety following the junta’s arson

A column of over 200 military council soldiers carried out indiscriminate shootings and torched civilian houses in Ywathit village in KhinU Township of Sagaing Region, at 5.30 am on 1 June, according to locals.

“Military council soldiers and Pyu Saw Htee members stationed in Inpatkway entered the village in the early morning. People from Ywathit village and people from nearby villages fled for safety due to burning of houses and indiscriminate shootings in the village,” a local from Ywathit village said.

Ywathit village is located beside YeU-Nyaungbinthar road. More than 3,000 locals from Chanthargone, Nyaungbinchan, Saegyi and Muthar villages near Ywathit village fled to safer places.

“Around 2,500-3,000 people have fled for safety. They are from four or five villages. They fled to safer places by carrying food and water. They (soldiers) usually torch civilian houses. I am not okay to flee to other places as I am old,” a 70-year-old woman from Chinthargone village said.

Military council soldiers frequently are carrying out the looting of rations, burning of houses and shootings in the villages, locals said.

Due to frequent arson and shootings by the military council troops, three locals were wounded, the villagers said.
