The military council bulldozed the home of Ma Kyein Dunt Keim, an activist arrested for participating in the Revolutionary Thingyan strike on the last day of the Thingyan in Kale Township, Sagaing Region, on 19 April.
The regime had also sealed off the residences of four participants in the main Monywa strike.
A group of about 30 junta soldiers arrived at the residence of Ma Kyein Dunt Keim in Taung Phila Ward, Kale Township, at about 3 pm on 19 April in a black Pajero SUV, two light military vehicles, a military truck and a JCB bulldozer and demolished it, according to a local witness.
“The destroyed house was a two-story brick house. After they finished demolishing the house, nothing was left undamaged except the kitchen area of about 7 or 8 feet. Not a single household item was allowed to be moved before demolition. When they were done, they just turned around and left,” he said.
It is unclear whether the junta also demolished the homes of the three other arrestees.
On 16 April at about 2 pm, regime soldiers unexpectedly appeared in cars and surrounded members of the Kale Township’s main strike group who were preparing for a flash strike as part of the Revolutionary Thingyan strike. As a result, four people-Ko Than Soe Oo, Ma Kyein Dunt Keim, Ma Hnin San and Ko Myo Ko Win-were arrested.
At around 4 pm, they were forced to show the location of their houses. The junta soldiers immediately sealed off the houses as soon as they found them, and also arrested Ma Kyein Dunt Keim’s mother and her disabled niece that day. The disabled woman was released on 18 April, but Ma Kyein Dunt Keim’s mother continued to be detained, a relative said.
The main strike group in Kale Township has kept up its daily demonstrations against the military council by any means necessary for 800 days, despite facing a harsh and brutal crackdown.
