A column of military council troops has burned down an estimated 150 houses in Nyawpyin and Aukkyaukwut villages and also shot dead a young man in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region, locals told Than Lwin Times.
On 21 March, a 100-strong regime column reportedly advanced into Nyawpyin in two columns by water and land. The junta soldiers then set fire to Nyawpyin and Aukkyaukwut villages and also shot Ko Kham Me, a 20-year-old boy.
As a result of the junta soldiers’ arson attack, about 100 houses in Nyawpyin and about 50 houses in Aukkyaukwut were destroyed.
The incursion of the military council troops into the villages forced about 1,000 people to flee to safety. After the junta troops left, they returned to their homes but faced difficulties, locals said.
Military council troops have been patrolling villages in the restive Launglon Township since the second week of March, burning about 180 houses in two days on 20 and 21 March.
According to a 4 March report by Southern Monitor – an independent research group – more than 400 houses have been burned by regime troops in the Thanitharyi Region in the two years since the military coup.
