Three elderly civilians were killed by the junta’s arson which destroyed more than 60 houses in Htanaungtaw village in Monywa Township of Sagaing Region, at around 5 am on 15 March, according to locals.

“We all had to flee for safety when the junta soldiers burned the houses in the village. The elderly civilians died in the fire as they were unable to run away,” a local from Htanaungtaw village said.
The arson killed an 80-year-old woman and two men in their 60s.

The junta soldiers entered the village from the east by firing shots. They burned down the houses in the village and shot a mobile tower in Nyaungbinsauk, the eyewitness said.

Htanaungtaw village has over 250 households. Villagers fled to safer places when the junta soldiers entered the village.

“We had to put out fire when they (soldiers) left the village. The fire killed the elderly civilians as we had to rescue them only after putting out fire,” a local said.

The junta soldiers burned down four houses in Htanaungtaw (North) village and three houses in Htanaungtaw (South) in September last year.
