The military council’s indiscriminate artillery shelling killed a child and wounded more than eight people in Lethit village in Tanintharyi Township of Tanintharyi Region, according to locals.

At around 7 am on 10 March, the artillery force indiscriminately fired more than 10 rounds of heavy shells into east Lethit village and nearby villages in Tanintharyi Township.

“Some heavy shells fired by the military council landed on the house and road in east Lethit village, killing an eight-year-old child and wounded more than eight people,” a local said.

The wounded are receiving medical treatment at a clinic in a liberated area. Most of the wounded are at the age between 40 and 60, the local added.

The heavy shells fired by the military council destroyed four civilian houses.

The PDFs have controlled East Lethit village and some nearby villages. Due to the frequent fighting there, the military council usually fires heavy shells.

“It can be said that we have controlled the area here. The military usually fired heavy shell when there was fighting. There are no battles. Although there was no battle, the military council carried out indiscriminate artillery shelling,” a People’s Defense Force (PDF) member from Tanintharyi Township.

After the declaration of martial law in Tanintharyi Township, the military council is carrying out the deployments of troops in the township. Due to the frequent fighting with the PDFs, civilians fled to safer places.
