Military council soldiers were conducting a thorough search in some villages in Mawlamyine Township, Mon State, for government employees who participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), locals reported.
Last month, junta troops entered Katoe, Kawthnat, and Kawthla villages posing as guest list inspectors and asking if there were CDM participants in the households, a local said.
“They [junta soldiers] came to our village and asked about it while pretending to check the guest list. Some of them were wearing civilian clothes,” said the Kawthnat village resident.
In addition, the regime’s soldiers constantly checked the guest lists and asked residents about the CDM participants, residents said.
They reportedly arrested some people during the inspection of the guest lists and demanded money for their release.
“I was arrested just for coming home late at night. Some people were slapped. They asked about the CDM participants. In my case, I had to give MMK 200,000 to the police station to be released,” said one of the arrested people.
Currently, at least 10 locals have been arrested by the military council, said a resident of Kawthla village.
