Clashes between military council troops and resistance forces have continued to intensify in Palaw, Tanintharyi and Dawei Townships in Tanintharyi Region, displacing more than 25,000 people, according to local defence forces.
After imposing martial law on Palaw and Tanintharyi Townships on 2 February, the military council began conducting military activities in the two areas with a large number of troops.
The deployment of large number of troops led to at least 20 clashes with resistance forces in Palaw, Tanintharyi and Dawei and the displacement of more than 25,000 people to safer locations.
Reportedly, by 20 February, fighting had displaced more than 20,000 people in Plalaw and nearly 5,000 in Tanintharyi, as well as hundreds of displaced people in Dawei.
The spokesman for Battalion 1 of the People’s Defence Forces (PDF) in Myeik District said the IDPs are in need of shelters, blankets and food as their numbers increase.
Amid ongoing fighting between the two sides, IDPs are being denied access to adequate relief supplies as the regime has restricted the delivery of medical supplies, food and blocked routes.
A statement released on 6 February said more than 7,000 people had been displaced by fighting in Tanintharyi Region since the military coup two years ago.
