Civilian seriously injured in landmine blast in Lamaing, Mon State

A local man was seriously injured when he was hit by a landmine on 17 February amid increasing landmine explosions in Lamaing area of Ye Township, Mon State, locals reported.

“He stepped on a mine when he left his plantation near the Kyoetada Creek to do the shopping. One of his legs was hit. This is the fourth landmine explosion near this creek. We have to be careful here,” said a Lamaing resident.

A 59-year-old man named U Nyunt Wai from Mawtkanin village was hit by the landmine near the creek at around 9:30 am on 17 February.

As his left leg serioulsy injured by the blast, U Nyunt Wai was taken to Lamaing Hospital by social workers for treatment.

Earlier, there had been a landmine explosion near Kyoetada village, injuring a man from Mawtkanin village was injured while he was riding his bicycle.

Also, on 30 January, a plumber was hit by a landmine near Kyoetada village, requiring him have to have a leg amputated, locals said.

Between 28 January and 17 February, a total of four cases of landmine explosions were reported near Kyoetada village, worrying local people as they face difficulties working on their farms.

“I don’t dare to go to the farm anymore because landmine explosions keep happening. And we are afraid because people are hit by landmines on the trails,” said a local resident.

The area near Kyoetada Bridge where landmines were found is a place where military council troops are stationed, and resistance forces often come to attack them.

The resistance forces operating in Ye Township have often attacked junta camps, their checkpoints and departmental offices that are under the command of the military council.
