A monk was killed and six women wounded in a shooting between 27th mile and Hnankyal village in Yebyu Township in Tanintharyi Region, officials of local social rescue organizations told the Than Lwin Times.
On the evening of 6 February, an unknown armed force shot a vehicle leaving Dawei for new Yebyu village by carrying a monk of the new Yarphu village monastery.
“Yesterday evening, we went to the incident to do rescue operations as we got the information about the shooting of a vehicle. There were eight people in the vehicle. Many gunshots hit the car. A monk and a woman were killed. The driver and children were wounded. Those on the vehicle are from Maungmalshaung,” an official of the social rescue organization said.
Due to the shootings, monk U Otkahta, 60 of the Buddha Sasana Rakhitta monastery in new Yarphu village and Daw Ohn Myint, 65, died on the spot.
Six persons on the vehicle including driver U Than Htwe, Maung Moe Thura, Ma Thin Yanant Hlaing, Ma Nan Moe were wounded.
No armed groups have yet to claim responsibility for that shooting. Relevant People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) are making an investigation into the case.
“As far as I know, the armed group shot the car when there was no traffic on the road. We will investigate which groups committed it and why they did it. The responsible organizations must issue a public statement over the casualties of innocent people, with accountability and reasonability,” a family member of the victim told the Than Lwin Times.
Local social rescue organizations transported the victims to Kaleainaung hospital and Dawei Hospital.
In early 2022, a monk from Mudu village was wounded in an attack on the vehicle between Mudu village and Hteingyi village in Nubulae area in Yebyu Township.
