Two MPs arrested by military council soldiers in Yenangyaung Township, Magway Region, are in a life-threatening condition, locals told Than Lwin Times.
On January 8, Minbu MP U Win Win and Pwintbyu MP U Tun Tun were beaten and arrested by regime soldiers in Shadaw village, Yenangyaung Township.
“U Win Win was beaten with a plowing log from the moment he was arrested. The junta soldiers beat and swore at him all the time. U Tun Tun was also forced to call the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) names and was beaten several times from behind with rifle butts. They also hit him in the face, leaving him with a bruise on his face. There are some locals who fainted from the junta soldiers’ beatings,” a local told Than Lwin Times.
In addition to the two MPs, regime soldiers also reportedly abducted ten other local residents.
“They didn’t act on clues, but seemed to know exactly who to arrest. They came from both land and water and surrounded the village at about 5 am. They fired rifles and started rounding up people,” said a resident.
According to reports, about 100 regime soldiers cordoned off and searched the villages of Shadaw and Kywete and also searched the surrounding forests.
Currently, the military council has increased security around Yenangyaung Township and deployed ambush patrols.
Since the military coup, the military council has arrested and detained NLD party members and MPs on various charges.
According to statistics, by the end of October 2022, 1169 NLD party members had been arrested and 67 people had died.
The NLD party told Than Lwin Times that among those arrested were 90 MPs who had won the 2020 election.
