A 55-year-old woman died of excessive bleeding in Demoso township, Karenni (Kayah) State, after being hit by artillery shells around 7 pm on January 3. A 77-year-old man in the eastern part of the township was also injured.
When two artillery shells hit the camp for internally displaced people in western Demoso, Daw Su Myar, 55, was fatally hit in the right thigh by shrapnel, her husband said.
“The shell smashed through the roof of the tent and hit her. It broke her thigh. But I put my arms around her and told her it was not broken. But she was bleeding badly and died,” Daw Su Myar’s husband recounted.
Daw Su Myar lived in the village of Dawnoeku. She returned to the village to work during the day and spent the night in the IDP camp. About 20 people live in the IDP camp in similar makeshift shelters.
In addition, a 77-year-old man suffering from a stroke was hit by artillery shrapnel in the east of Demoso in the evening, breaking his left hand, according to an eyewitness.
“The artillery shells hit around 7:40 pm. An elderly man was hit by the shrapnel. He was suffering from a stroke. He could no longer hear the sound of the artillery fire. His left hand was hit. His right hand is paralyzed and he can no longer move it. His left hand, which is movable, was hit by the artillery shell.”
Locals said no less than five artillery shells were also fired in the eastern part of Demoso Township. In addition, on January 3 alone, Dawmukalar village in Loikaw Township was hit by artillery shells, injuring two people.
