Residents of villages in the Ashae Taw area in Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region fear a rice shortage in the near future as the miliary council increasingly restricts rice transportation to the area, residents told the Than Lwin Times.
The regime had blocked the right to transport rice to Dawei’s Ashae Taw area since early October.
They have started checking rice trucks at the Pakarri and Byaw Taw Wa checkpoints and have confiscated the rice.
The junta’s ban on rice transport has caused rice prices in the region to rise exponentially, raising concerns among the population that they may face rice shortages in the near future.
On the other hand, the miliary council continues to deploy more troops and prepare for increased military activity in the region after ceasing supplies to the Ashae Taw area.
Clashes between junta forces and People’s Defense Forces (PDF) may intensify after the ban on food supplies, a PDF official in the Ashae Taw area told the Than Lwin Times.
After the military coup, fighting between PDF members and junta forces continues in Dawei’s Ashae Taw area, where regime forces have burned civilian homes and arbitrarily killed civilians.
