The National Unity Government (NUG) said Oct. 7 at a press conference on “One-Year Review of the People’s War of Resistance and Determination of Next Steps” that it has set next year as the decisive year for the ongoing revolution.
The NUG announced that it will no longer afford to give time to the military council, which is looking for a political way out or breathing space and has long pursued a strategy of ‘delay, divide and distract,’ and that it has begun drafting a one-year plan to accelerate offensives with allied forces.
“One thing we can guarantee. There will be a result. This one year is the final year. We have carefully chosen the ‘final year for the final assault.’ If people join together to fulfill these small needs [with the resistance], our common goal of eliminating the military dictatorship will be achieved. If people join the struggle in this way, the answer will come in one year,” NUG spokesman U Nay Phone Latt said at the press conference.
The NUG has already prepared a plan to attack the enemy politically, militarily, economically and in international relations in many ways. Next year will be a decisive year for the revolution, a statement released after the press conference said.
“This ‘one year’ is the period we have formally announced and talked about. We also have a plan, and in the next few days after this press conference we will begin to put those plans into action,” the NUG spokesman added.
A report that came out with the NUG press conference also includes sectoral reviews such as military affairs, territorial control, state administration, rule of law, alliance building, international relations, finance, public participation and future plans.
In military affairs, the NUG was able to form the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) for defensive warfare and secure a force capable of fighting the military council’s forces in coordination with allied forces. In terms of territorial control, the ethnic alliance and the NUG already have more than 50 percent nationwide, according to the report.
In state administration, the NUG has worked with the alliance to establish a provisional local administration in areas it controls, and it is already providing services to the population. To date, it has established 20 provisional detention cells and begun investigating 116 cases, as well as formed state police forces that rely on police officers who participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) to carry out law enforcement activities.
The report also shows improvements in all areas, including finance, international relations and public participation, as shown in a timeline of previous comparisons.
Armed resistance intensified throughout Myanmar after the NUG officially declared D-Day on September 7, 2021, and according to some resistance forces, large areas of the country were controlled by means of armed struggle.
