The military council arrested more than 70 civilians after a village administrator was assassinated in Yegyi Township in Ayeyarwady Region.
U Tar Tay, a military-appointed administrator from Zayathla village was shot dead near Kyonetar village at around 3 pm on September 28th while returning to his home by motorbike after attending the meeting in Yegyi, according to locals.
Following the incident, the military council soldiers entered Myitsal, Zayathla and Kyonetar villages and then arrested more than 70 locals. The military also arrested some people in downtown Ngathaingchaung, a local from Ngathaingchaung said.
Two gunmen on a motorbike fired five rounds at U Tar Tay from Zayathla village in Ngathaingchaung sub-township in Yegyi Township. U Tar Tay got bullet wounds to his head and chest and died on the spot.
“Shortly after the shooting, the 100-household head, informants and soldiers arrested the villagers door to door by tying their hands with ropes. They arrest the villagers even though they don’t know who assassinated him,” he added.
The military is interrogating the detainees. The families of detainees have lost contact with them.
