Four civilians were killed and 13 civilians injured by the heavy shelling which landed on a monastery near Mwaytaw pagoda in Moebye on the early morning of September 16th, according to a local from Moebye.

“The heavy shelling killed two men in their 50s and two children aged below 10 and injured many others,” the local says.

Currently, the rescue operation is under way for the injured. Among the injured are the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking shelter in Mwaytaw pagoda.

At night on September 15th and on September 16th, the military council carried out indiscriminate firing of heavy shells in Moebye without any clash, locals say.

“I don’t know which groups fired heavy weapons. I can’t say exactly which groups suffered casualties. At 6 am, the heavy shelling injured many people,” said a person who is helping the IDPs.

There was intense fighting between the military council and the Karenni Defense Forces in downtown Moebye for five consecutive days since September 8th. The local defense forces issued statements warning locals to move to safer places as fighting may occur in downtown Moebye at any time.

There are internet and phone blackouts following the clashes in downtown Moebye, according to locals.
