More than 100 civilians were killed and more than 300,000 civilians injured by the fighting between a combined force of the military council and the Border Guard Force (BGF) and the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) in the Karen National Union (KNU)-controlled territories during 20 months till August 2022, according to the list released by the KNU.
From January, 2021 till August this year, there were 6,356 clashes between the KNU, the military council and the BGF, resulting in 131 deaths, 294 injuries and displacing 371,958 locals, according to the KNU’s report.
A combined force of the military council and the BGF suffered 5,125 deaths and 4,147 injuries while the KNLA suffered 137 deaths and 352 injuries.
During 20 months of fighting, the military council fired 4,456 rounds of heavy shells into the villages in addition to the KNU’s camps. In addition, the military council conducted 177 airstrikes and detained 412 innocent civilians, the KNU says.
Following the coup, intense fighting has been taking place in six brigades of the KNU. Brigades-5, 6, 1 and 3 territories of the KNU saw more intense fighting. The forces under the KNU could seize nine military camps of the military council.
