Nearly 2,300 civilian deaths recorded during 18 months of coup

The total number of innocent civilians who were violently killed by the military council troops during 18 months of coup has reached 2,261, according to the report released by the AAPP (Assistance Association for Political Prisoners) on September 1st.

Yangon and Mandalay Regions saw the highest number of casualties. The total number of detainees has exceeded 10,000, according to the AAPP’s report.

On August 31st, the junta’s artillery shelling on Zeekyun village in Myaung Township of Sagaing Region, where the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are taking shelters, killed two IDPs namely, U Khin Maung Oo and Ko Kyaw Swar Thein and injured three females, including an eight-year-old girl.

An official of the Civilian Defence and Security Organization of Myaung (CDSOM) said: “The military fired heavy shells into the village on purpose. There is no fighting. The military fired heavy weapons into Zeekyun village via Thanutkone village. The IDPs are taking shelter there. One artillery shell landed near a clinic in the village. Another heavy shell landed in the center of the village. The villagers are taking shelter at the monastery in the center of the village. Artillery shells hit them.”

In addition to the brutal killings and arrests, the military council illegally sealed off more than 760 houses and buildings during the period from February 1st, 2021 till the end of July, the report says.

During 18 months of coup from February 1st, 2021 to July 31st, 2022, more than 6,678 armed clashes were reported across the country, according to the Institute for Strategy and Policy (ISP)-Myanmar’s report.

Among them, more than 3,993 clashes were recorded in Karen State and more than 641 in Sagaing Region, the ISP-Myanmar says.

Till July 15th, 2022 since February 1st, 2021, the total number of houses and buildings (religious buildings), which were burned down by the military council and hit by artillery shells, have exceeded 28,419, according to the statement.

Sagaing Region suffered the most, losing 20,485 houses and buildings burned down by the military council. Over 72 percent of them were completely destroyed, according to the ISP-Myanmar’s report.
