Three locals including a child injured in military shelling in Kawkareik

Three locals including a child from Yankoke village were injured in a heavy shelling from Hlaingwa-based military camp after the fighting in downtown Kawkareik in Karen State, locals have confirmed.

The military council army fired heavy shells into the villages in the south and north of Kawkareik after the a combined force of the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and its allies attacked District and Myoma police station, the bank and the security camp in downtown Kawkareik Township, at around 10 am on August 15th.

“Currently, the shootings continue. The military fired heavy weapons into Kaunghmu (Kawhmu). Heavy shells landed on Yankoke and hit three locals. The injured are two children and a woman. The firing of light weapons has stopped. The military fired six rounds of heavy shells,” a local told the KIC.
The military council army fired heavy weapons at a five-minute interval.

The artillery shelling hit and injured a local in Ankaung village in the south of Kawkareik. A total of five locals were injured in the fighting, according to local sources.

The military has tightened security and inspections in Kawkareik and nearby areas. Locals from nearby villages are staying indoors.

Some police members including a district police major were killed in the shooting on August 15th.

The combined force arrested some police members alive and seized six guns including medium machine guns and some ammunition, the Ngwe Maung Than media which quoted those involved in the fighting, reported.
