A school opens the half-day classes after heavy shells landed in front of a self-reliant school for the internally displaced children in the western Demawso in Karenni State, a female teacher said.
“We are concerned about heavy shelling. We cannot predict when heavy shells will land. We have to run the school with serious concerns. We continue to do teaching despite insecurity and serious concerns in order not to hamper the learning of children,” a female teacher said.
The artillery shelling damaged the school’s roof. There were no reports of casualties as the artillery shell landed on the holiday, she added.
A total of 306 students attended the self-reliant school. There are only 222 students left after the artillery shelling, according to teachers.
In the last week of July and in August, more than seven artillery shells landed on the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. The artillery shelling injured a Grade-3 male student aged 10 and killed a Grade-7 female student aged 13. Civilian casualties were also reported.
The schools are closed for one week as the military council is carrying out frequent firing of heavy shells into the IDP camps.
More than 10 civilian casualties were reported in August due to the military council’s artillery shells into the village, according to the report by the Karenni Human Rights Group.
