Howan Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camp in Demawso Township in Kayah (Karenni State) is in need of assistance as it is facing a shortage of rice ration , according to the IDP organizations.

The shortage of rations is due to transportation difficulty and a drop in the number of donors in the rainy season, those helping the IDPs said.

“Food ration becomes a major challenge for the IDPs as they have to take shelter at the camp for a longer period of time. We allocate the rice rations based on the average number of population as the families which have many members get unfair share of rice. The allocation of rice ration is based on the availability of rice. The wellwishers donate money but it is just 10-day rations for the IDPs. The IDPs have to even borrow money to buy rice as the small-scale farming at the IDP camp is not successful,” said an official of the Job for Kayah (JFK) which is helping the IDPs and the staff who have joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).

The Karenni IDPs have no even rice as they cannot do their farming in their villages.
Howan IDP camp has more than 500 people and more than 120 households.

Currently, the JFK is raising funds to buy 100 bags of rice for the IDPs. However, it has got around 70 bags of rice.

The JFK said it can donate around 60 bags of rice as it will use the fund for the donation of 0.5 viss of edible oil each.

Since the coup on February 1st, 2021, the JFK has been helping the IDPs and the CDM staff in Karenni State.

In late June, the JFK provided cash assistance to 650 CDM staff in Karenni State with Ks-50,000 per head, according to the JFK’s statement.

The Job for Kayah (JFK) is a self-reliant organization which has nothing to do with political organizations and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
