Eight persons including a woman killed in Gangaw Township

The military council troops killed seven men and raped and killed a woman in a village in Gangaw Township of Magway Region, according to locals.

“On July 4th, a military column of around 150 soldiers entered Yayshin village in Gangaw Township. Soldiers raped and killed a woman. The military also killed seven men and burned some houses in the village. Now the military column proceeded to Chaungkhwa village. I don’t know what they are doing there. One of those killed is Khin Maung Htay. I don’t know the names of the remaining victims. Among those killed is a woman. I can’t say exactly what is going on as we are hiding in the forests,” a local man says.

Although there is no clash, the military column is committing the violations of human rights in Yayshin village in Gangaw Township under the pretext of area clearance operation, according to locals.

It is still unknown how many houses were burned down in the village as the military remains in the village.

“Since the early morning of July 4th, the military entered Yayshin village by firing shots. The military arrested youths and women in the village. Three men were killed in the afternoon. A woman was raped and killed. The bodies of those killed by the military are still in the village. We are unable to collect the bodies of the victims as we are sheltering in the remote area,” a local woman says.

The victim who was raped and killed by the military is a 26-year-old woman from Shwebo village. The victim has a child, according to locals.

Till July 5th, the villagers are unable to collect the bodies of those killed. Some people from Yayshin village are taking shelter at a monastery in the village while some others have fled to safer places.

“The military abducted 21 people from Yayshin village yesterday. The military entered Chaungkhwa village in the west of Yayshin village by using the detainees as human shields. The military carried out the area clearance operation. There was no clash. Locals have fled to safer places,” a local woman continues.

The military column abducted 21 villagers to be used as human shields. Two children are still missing, the locals say.

Villagers are hiding in the nearby forests as the military column is carrying out military operations in Kyaukchat, Shwebo, Hnankhar, Koneywar, Myinthar, Chaungkhwa, Yehla, Thazi and Mwaylae villages in Gangaw Township.
