Nearly 20 soldiers of the military council were killed in the fighting in Kyaungneint village in Palaw Township in Tanintharyi Region due to the mistaken firing of heavy shells, officials of the Palaw Township People’s Defense Force (PDF) told the Than Lwin Times.
On June 13th, intense fighting erupted between the military and a combined force of local PDFs when around 100 soldiers made an offensive in the village.
Palaw Township-based No.285 Battalion of the military council fired heavy shells as the military suffered heavy casualties.
“Since morning, fighting started when more than 100 soldiers entered the village. From around 10 am to noon, the fighting intensified. At least eight soldiers were killed in the fighting. More than ten soldiers were also killed as No.285 Battalion of the military council fired heavy shells mistakenly. Many soldiers were wounded,” an official of the Palaw Township PDF told the Than Lwin Times.
One member of Palaw Township PDF was killed and two others wounded in the fighting.
In the fighting, the military burned down seven houses and four motorcycles in the village.
Currently, thousands of the locals have fled to nearby forests and safer places due to the armed conflicts.
