Heavy shelling displaces more than 3,000 people from four villages in Thaton District

More than 3,000 people from four villages in Thaton District under No.1 Brigade of the Karen National Union (KNU) in Mon State, who were displaced by the military council’s heavy shelling, are in urgent need of aid, the KNU (central)’s statement on June 6th.

“Locals have to flee due to heavy shelling. Some people are taking shelters at the houses of their relatives while some people have fled to downtown,” a local says.

More than 3,000 locals from Wiyaw, Thoneainsu, Htonebogyi and Htonebolay villages in Wiyaw village-tract in Thaton Township have to flee to the nearby villages due to the heavy shelling, the KNU says.

Although The IDPs are taking shelter in the houses of their relatives in nearby villages, they are in need of rations and shelters.

Due to the rainy season, there are in urgent need of shelters, waterproof sheets, rice, edible oil, salt and medicines. The IDPs are at risk of getting flu,” an official of the KNU (Central) says.

After the coup, there were frequent fighting between the military council troops and the KNU in Thaton District of the KNU’s Brigade-1.

Since June 1st, the military council troops stationed in Wiyaw village from No.9 Light Infantry Battalion have been firing heavy weapons into the villages
