The police detained three vehicles carrying 104 Muslims (Rohingya) from Arakan State, at a checkpoint in Ayeyarwaddy Region, on the evening of May 27th.
A police officer who declined to be named said: “A combined force of police and immigration department arrested 104 people— 57 men, 42 women and five children. Among the five children are four female and one male. Muslims (Rohingya) were detained at Yaynanthar checkpoint in Yegyi Township when three vehicles loaded with them entered Yegyi via Gwa Township.”
The police arrested 17 men, 14 women and one under-age child on a vehicle with the plate number- 2M/6297 SKAT; 20 men and 13 women on a six-wheel vehicle with the plate number-4H/9170 TURBO; and 20 men, 15 women and four under-aged children on a six-wheel vehicle with the plate number-7G/3383 SKAT.
“The police have detained the drivers and seized the vehicles. I have heard the news that they have to pay money to brokers to transport them from Arakan State to Yangon Region via Gwa Township.
The detainees are from the northern Arakan State. The officials are interrogating them about detailed information, the police officer added.
The detainees plan to go to the Thai border from Arakan State to Ayeyarwady Region, Yangon Region, Mon State and Karen State. From there, they will go to Malaysia.
