More than 500 Myanmar expats dressed in black T-shirts staged a protest in front of the UNHCR office in New Delhi on March 28th, calling for giving humanitarian aid and protection to the refugees taking shelter in India.

Due to the political and military situations in Myanmar, the number of the refugees leaving Myanmar for India, is increasing day by day. The protest aims to protect the refugees and provide humanitarian aid, said Ma Sindi, an official of New Delhi-based Myanmar Refugee Demand Committee.

“We have three main purposes. No.1 is to ensure the resettlement of Myanmar refugees in India, No.2 is to issue the smart cards by carrying out a Refugee Status Determination (RSD) interview with those who have got temporary cards swiftly and No.3 is to ensure the issuance of temporary cards, blue card and asylum seeker cards to the new refugees. In addition to it, we also called on the Indian government to swiftly give the protection and humanitarian aid to the refugees,” Ma Sindi added.

Currently, there are more than 6,000 refugees in New Delhi of India.
