The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are taking shelter on the bank of Thaungyin River following the fighting in Lay Kay Kaw in late December, need help for repairing their makeshift tents due to the untimely rains in the recent days, said Saw Al Hu from the Emergency IDP Committee which is helping the IDPs in the east of Dawna Mountain.

“The waterproof sheets were damaged by the rains and winds. The IDPs are in need of help to repair their makeshift tents. They also need help for health care and rations,” he told the KIC.

Currently, more than 5,000 people are taking shelter on the bank of Thaungyin River. Most of the IDPs are the elderly, children and women. The effects of adverse weather and war are felt hardest by women and children, Saw Al Hu added.

In recent days, the fighting has resumed in Karen State. The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) combined force recaptured a hilltop military outpost where the military council troops and the Border Guard Force (BGF) are stationed. In turn, the military council troops conducted airstrikes there.

An elderly was injured by the military council’s bombardments. Some religious buildings and houses were also destroyed. Locals have to flee to safer places again, according to those who are helping the IDPs.

The untimely rains in recent two days damaged some makeshift tents and led to the accumulation of water.
