The National Unity Government (NUG) called on the international community to recognize the NUG, to block arms sales and cut off the military council’s sources of income, the NUG’s Acting President Duwa Lashi La, said in his New Year address delivered on December 31st, 2021.
“The international community needs to impose sanctions on the businesses which are the lifeblood of the junta. In particular, it needs to cut off the junta’s sources of income including income from natural gas and remittance and deny the military council’s legitimacy in regional and international organizations like the UN and the ASEAN.
The Acting President called on the international community to recognize the NUG as the NUG has committed to protecting the people from tortures and killings and abiding by the international laws and human rights.
“I earnestly urge the international community to cooperate with the NUG in the preventive and control measures against the COVID-19, help the public who have lost their jobs and faced hunger due to the declining economy triggered by the coup and help the CSOs and support cross-border aid system so as to provide humanitarian and direct assistance to the refugees displaced by armed conflicts which erupted in the wake of the coup.
The acting President also pointed out that the junta troops are carrying out human rights violations such as tortures, the killings and burnings of people and the rape of ethnic women across the country.
Following the coup, fighting has been taking place between the EAOs and the junta troops and between the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) and the junta troops.
Due to fighting, locals have fled to safer places. The refugees are in need of accommodation and food, said those who are helping the IDPs.
The elected candidates of the National League for Democracy (NLD) which secured the majority seats, formed the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) after the military staged a coup on February 1st.
With the aim of building up a federal democratic union, the CRPH abolished the military-drafted 2008 Constitution and declared the federal democracy charter.
Following the issuance of this statement, the NUG composed of the majority of ethnics was formed on April 16th.
