Fighting took place between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) Brigade-6 and the military council’s troops, in Kwinkalay village in Kyarinseikgyi Township in Karen State at around 2 pm on August 23rd.
The military council’s troops encountered the KNLA troops when the military council’s troops returned to the Kyeik military camp abandoned on the morning of August 21st, according to locals.
A local who declined to be named said: “Fighting occurred at Kwinkalay village. I heard the sounds of heavy shelling four times. There were the firings of small weapons. It took more than 10 minutes. Now it has returned to normal. All people here are concerned.”
Kwinkalay village is located on the road connecting Kyaikdone and Kawkareik.
After the outbreak of fighting, the military council’s troops arrested local youths in Kwinkalay and Wettakhone villages, to be used as porters. Local youths are hiding in safer places, according to locals.
