The military council’s troops fired heavy weapons into the villages in Waingmaw, Dawphoneyan and Moemauk Townships, following the Kachin Independence Army’s (KIA) attack on a camp of the people’s militia in Waingmaw Township in Kachin State, according to locals.

At around 8 pm on July 11st, the KIA attacked the people’s militia camp under the control of the military council, near Aungmyay-1 village in Waingmaw Township and seized weapons.

A local said: “I heard the sounds of gunfire consecutively. No one dared to go to see it. It is very close to the village. At the beginning, I heard the sounds of heavy shelling. Later, I heard the sounds of gunfire. The KIA set fire to the militia’s huts and took all guns.”

“The camp is located near the bridge of Aungmyay-1. As far as I know, the camp is the Lisu People’s Militia. All the people in the camp have run away due to the KIA’s attack last night. The army’s battalion-58 in Waingmaw fired heavy weapons to Nanzawyan village shortly after the KIA set fire to the camp,” the local added.

Following the attacks, the Light Infantry Battalion-142 and the Light Infantry Battalion-387 in Dawphoneyan Township fired heavy weapons on the hill camps 19, 25 and 30 of the KIA.

A local from Dawphoneyan Township said: “LIB-142 from Dawphoneyan and Division-88 of the army stationed in the hospital fired heavy weapons into the village at around 8.30 pm on July 11st. Heavy shells fell in the compound of U Khin Maung Nyunt’s house in Dawphoneyan group-3. He got injury to his hand. And four cows were killed by the heavy shelling. The army fired heavy weapons to Konelaw village in Moemauk Township, yesterday night. Three houses were damaged by heavy shelling.”

In the whole of June, the army frequently fired heavy weapons into the villages in Moemauk and Dawphoneyan Townships.

More than 6,000 locals have been taking shelter in downtown areas of Bhamo and Moemauk Townships as there remain artillery shelling and military activities despite having no fighting there.
