The total number of Karenni people killed by the military council during the five months since the military coup has reached nearly 80, according to the Karenni Civil Society Network (KCSN).
Khu Ko Yal, Spokesperson of the KCSN said: “Till July 4th, the number of people killed in Karenni State has reached 76. This figure is compiled by the KCSN amid the violations of human rights in Karenni State from February 1st to July 4th after the military coup.”
The figures cover those killed in the fighting, the deaths caused by the indiscriminate shootings by the military council’s troops and the killings during the arrest and detention and those killed while carrying rations for the IDPs.
The KCSN continued to say that the actual number of victims may be higher than the current confirmed number of 76.
Among 76 victims are 12 persons killed from June 22nd to July 4th and a youth who was shot dead by the Light Infantry Battalion (Khamaya)-422 while he was on motorbike from Moebye to Phalkhone on the evening of June 28th.
Among the victims are those from the Karenni PDF and civilians. Most of the victims are civilians from Demawso Township, said the KCSN spokesperson.
Khu Ko Yal continued: “The number of detainees included in this report is 132. But that number has increased on that date. The number of detainees is 134. Among them, the number of the injured is 102. This happens after the coup. We have compiled the lists of those arrested, killed and injured.
According to the statement by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) on July 8th, 898 people have been killed and 5,127, detained by the military council across the country.
The members of the military council are carrying out brutal killings, arrests and tortures of the people. In addition, religious buildings and houses were damaged by the artillery shelling, said Khu Ko Yal.
In addition, the members of the army took rice and pet animals and committed various forms of human rights violations, the KCSN’s Spokesperson added.
Since the coup, the fighting between the military council and ethnic armed groups have been taking place not only in the forests but also in urban areas. The fighting between the military council and the PDFs has also erupted.
Locals are experiencing the army’s killings, arrests and tortures. As many locals are fleeing the fighting, locals are facing many difficulties and living with fear and anxiety, said the persons who help the IDPs.
