Junta troops torch traditional looms, villages in Sagaing’s Shwebo

Military council troops have reportedly burned villages, including Htoogyi village, where Myanmar traditional handlooms and mechanized looms are located, and hundreds of houses in Shwebo Township, Sagaing Region.

Shwebo, along with Wetlet and Ayadaw, are among the three townships in the region that were placed under martial law on 2 February.

Following the imposition of martial law in the areas, the Shwebo Defense Forces (SBDF) repelled the first approaching column of military council troops, said Ko Zeyar of the local defense forces.

“We can say that it was the first junta column after the imposition of martial law announced. They had to retreat because we resisted them with mines and 79-mm and 40-mm rounds. We were able to stop them from torching [villages]. At the moment, we are still clearing the areas and will announce more information soon,” he said.

Currently, the Myanmar army controls only the downtown areas of Shwebo, while the rest is under the control of resistance forces, Ko Zeyar claimed.

“We did our best to repel them, but we’d like to apologize for failing to fully protect people’s lives and property. Please share this the public through your news media,” said Ko Zeyar, SBDF spokesman.
