Monekoe locals call on armed groups to avoid fighting near the village

Locals from Monekoe have called armed organizations to avoid fighting near the village following the artillery shelling in the village.

A local from Wainghsaing village said: “I would like to request armed groups to avoid clashes near the village.”

On December 21, there was a clash between the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA)-Kokang and the army in Hopan village in Mantkan village-tract in Monekoe Township in Muse District in northern Shan State.

The demand came after the heavy shells landed on Wainhsaing village near Hopan village.

A villager said: “At around 12.30 pm on December 21, the fighting started near Hopan village. The fighting lasted nearly one hour. Heavy shells which landed in the village did not hit houses and people.”

A local said: “The army has not withdrawn from here despite having no clashes. I don’t get exact information where other armed groups have arrived. However, the Tatmadaw remains here. They (army) remain near Samar village.”

From December 7 to 13, there were clashes between the army and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) in Konethar village in Namhsan Township. The army conducted artillery shelling and airstrikes in the fighting which displaced locals. The attacks destroyed the houses.

Locals called on armed groups to avoid the fighting near the village as the fighting displaced locals, and heavy shelling hit and destroyed houses.
